A Note about the Grand Imam

     Grand Imam Prof. Aḥmad Aṭ-Ṭayyeb, was born in the village of Al-Qurna, west of Luxor, Egypt, on Ṣafar 3, 1365 AH / January 6, 1946 CE. He grew up and memorized the Qurˀān in his village. He obtained his primary education at the Esna and Qena Azhari Institutes. He joined the Faculty of Islamic Theology (Uṣūl ud-Dīn), Al-Azhar University in Cairo and graduated with excellence in 1389 AH/1969 CE. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in 1397 AH/1977 CE.

     Aṭ-Ṭayyeb continued to be promoted in both administrative and scholarly positions till he took office as the Grand Mufti of the Egyptian Fatwa House, and then he was appointed as the Rector of Al-Azhar University. In Rabīˁ uth-Thānī 3, 1431 AH/March 19, 2010, he took office as the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar. He has made a lot of achievements that restored the great role played by Al-Azhar Mosque and University, as well as their national and Islamic leadership.

Brief Biographical Notes

     Grand Imam Prof. Aḥmad Aṭ-Ṭayyeb, was born in the village of Al-Qurna, west of Luxor, Egypt, on Ṣafar 3, 1365 AH / January 6, 1946 CE. He grew up and memorized the Qurˀān in his village. He obtained his primary education at the Esna and Qena Azhari Institutes. He joined the Department of Theology and Philosophy at the Faculty of Islamic Theology (Uṣūl ud-Dīn) in Cairo, Al-Azhar University. At that time, he was educated by senior scholars, including former Grand Imams Abul-Ḥalīm Maḥmoud and Muḥammad ˁAbdur-Raḥmān Bīṣār. He graduated with excellence in 1389 AH/1969 CE, and obtained his Ph.D. degree in 1397 AH/1977 CE.

     Prof. Aḥmad Aṭ-Ṭayyeb continued to be promoted in both administrative and scholarly positions inside and outside Egypt. He was appointed as the Dean of the Faculty of Islamic Studies in Aswan, Al-Azhar University.  He also worked in a number of Arab universities, namely Imam Muḥammad Ibn Saˁūd University, Qatar University, United Arab Emirates University, and the International Islamic University in Islamabad, Pakistan, of which he was the Dean. He also participated in a large number of Islamic and international conferences and scholarly institutions.

     In 1422 AH/2002 CE, Prof. Aṭ-Ṭayyeb took office as the Grand Mufti of Egypt. During his assumption as the Grand Mufti, he issued 2,835 fatwas recorded in the archives of the Egyptian Fatwa House. He remained in this position until the first of Shaˁbān 1424 AH / September 27, 2003 CE when a decree was issued appointing him as the Rector of Al-Azhar University.

     Prof. Aḥmad Aṭ-Ṭayyeb has worked on developing the study at Al-Azhar University. He signed many agreements to open up to the Muslim world. He established some faculties and high institutes. In Rabīˁ uth-Thānī 3, 1431 AH/March 19, 2010, he took over Al-Azhar Sheikhdom as the Grand Imam, succeeding Grand Imam Prof. Muḥammad Sayyed Ṭanṭāwī.

     Since assuming Al-Azhar Sheikhdom, Grand Imam Prof.  Aṭ-Ṭayyeb has made many achievements that restored Al-Azhar's national and Islamic role and leadership, especially since the January 2011 Revolution.  Al-Azhar Al-Sharif has thus become the safe refuge to which the Egyptians resort. Among these achievements are the following:

  • In Rabīˁ ul-ˀAwwal 1432 AH/February 2011 CE, the Egyptian Family House was established.
  • On Rajab 19, 1432 AH/June 20, 2011 CE, Al-Azhar Document was issued.
  • On Ṣafar 16, 1433 AH/January 10, 2012 CE, Al-Azhar Statement on “The Fundamental System of Freedoms” was issued.
  • On January 31, 2013, Al-Azhar Document for Non-violence was issued.

     Grand Imam Aṭ-Ṭayyeb has an abundant scholarly production; he worked on many studies and research papers. In addition, he wrote books on Islamic Theology and Philosophy. He also contributed translations and editing works for a number of French books on Islamic Philosophy.

     During the reign of His Eminence, the Muḥammad bin Rāshid Āl- Maktoum Project was completed to preserve and publish Al-Azhar manuscripts electronically. Aṭ-Ṭayyeb also established the International Association for Al-Azhar Alumni. He amended Law No. 103 of 1961, and established Al-Azhar Memory Project.

Notable Contributions and Events
