Al-Azhar Grand Imam's Deputy, "Our goal is to carry out Al-Azhar message in Africa"

     On Monday, Feb 17, 2020, Sheikh Ṣaliḥ ‛Abbās, Al-Azhar Grand Imam's Deputy, received Dr. Jim Othman Drami, Head of the Department of Islamic Research and Studies at Sheikh Anta Diop University in the Senegalese capital Dakar.

     Sheikh Ṣaliḥ ‛Abbās said that Al-Azhar does not hesitate to provide all means of support to students coming from Senegal and from all Muslim countries to carry out the message of Al-Azhar by teaching Arabic and the sciences of Islamic Shari‛a, and promoting the moderation and tolerance of Islam in the world. He added that handling the religious discourse can only be through concerned and specialized institutions, and not subject to personal whims.

     His Eminence also indicated that the Grand Imam pays great attention to Africa, particularly to the African students at Al-Azhar Al-Sharif. He added that Al-Azhar receives more than five thousand students from Africa, including 350 Senegalese students, in addition to a large number of Azhari envoys in Senegal and other African countries. There, they teach the Noble Qur’ān, Arabic language, and sciences of Islamic Shari‛a to Senegalese children.

     On his part, Dr. Jim Othman Drami, Head of the Department of Islamic Research and Studies at Sheikh Anta Diop University in the Senegalese capital Dakar expressed his pride of studying at Al-Azhar Al-Sharif. He stressed that he and a number of Al-Azhar graduates are working on forming an association for Al-Azhar graduates in Senegal, aiming to carry out the message of Al-Azhar there. He added that Al-Azhar is an institution of great credibility to the Senegalese people, and that many Senegalese youth wish to study there.
