Our Fatwas

I vowed not to do any good for a year, but I want to break my oath. What should I do?

You should do good deeds although your oath has included refraining from benevolence and good deeds. Almighty Allah says, “Do not make your oath by Allah an excuse against being righteous and fearing Allah and making peace among people” (Qur’an, 2: 224). An oath that prevents a person from doing good deeds is reprehensible.

As a result, you have to expiate for the unfulfilled oath (kaffārat ul-yamīn). The Prophet (PBUH) said, "Whoever takes an oath and later on finds that another thing is better than it, he should do that which is better, and expiate for his oath."

You can expiate for breaking your oath by feeding ten poor persons, clothing them, or Freeing a believing slave (which is not available now), and they are optional.

If you cannot do any of the three options, you have to fast three days.
