Al Azhar holds ‘International Conference in Support of Jerusalem’

Al-Azhar International Conference in Support of al-Quds (Jerusalem) due to be held on 17 & 18 January 2018 will shed light on a number of issues including raising awareness of the issue of Jerusalem and emphasizing its Arab and Islamic identity. It will also highlight the international responsibility towards the occupied Holy City, reiterating that the international law dictates that the Zionist Occupation Forces must maintain the status-quo of al Quds.
This International Conference- organized by Al-Azhar Al-Sharif and the Muslim Council of Elders and which receives a significant attention on all levels- Arabic, Islamic and international- will review a number of topics under three major themes, as follows:
The first theme of the conference is entitled: “The Arab Identity of Jerusalem and Its Mission”; it includes several sub-headings dealing with: “The global and religious status of Jerusalem, The civilization of Jerusalem in past and present, the impact of changing the identity of Jerusalem on spreading hatred, and refuting the Zionist allegations about Jerusalem and Palestine.”
The second theme is entitled: "Raising Awareness of the Issue of Jerusalem". It will highlight the following topics: “The international legal status of Jerusalem, the political role in restoring awareness, the cultural and educational role in the issue of Jerusalem, and the importance of the media role in restoring awareness."
The third theme will yet focus on "The International Responsibility towards Jerusalem" and will tackle several topics, as follows: “the responsibility of religious institutions", "the responsibility of international organizations" and "the responsibility of global civil society" towards the occupied city.
Al-Azhar International Conference in Support of Jerusalem comes within the framework of a series of decisions taken by the Grand Imam Dr. Ahmad Al-Tayyeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, to respond to Trump’s decision to move U.S Embassy to occupied East Jerusalem.
It is expected that the conference will result in a number of important recommendations that will support the Palestinian cause and affirm the rights of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.
It is also expected that the conference will discuss preserving Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem in addition to a number of measures and decisions that will educate young people about the issue of Jerusalem, its history and its holy sites.
