Al-Azhar Observatory for Combating Extremism (AOCE) is closely monitoring the shooting incident that took place on Monday, July 28, 2025, inside an administrative building Manhattan, New York City, which resulted in the death of five individuals, including an off-duty police officer.
According to U.S. security sources, the suspect has been identified as "Shane Tamura," a resident of the state of Nevada. He reportedly committed suicide after carrying out the attack. Preliminary investigations show that the suspect had a legally issued firearm permit from Las Vegas.
The attack occurred within a building that includes major corporate and institutional offices, including those of the financial firm Blackstone, the Consulate General of the Republic of Ireland, and the National Football League (NFL). Gunfire was reportedly heard from the first floor, causing panic among employees, many of whom took shelter in meeting rooms. The scene was broadcast live by media outlets, showing footage of employees being evacuated with their hands raised above their heads as a precautionary measure.
In the same context, New York City Mayor Eric Adams stated that several people were injured. He confirmed that search operations inside the building are ongoing and urged those still inside to remain in place until full control of the situation is declared.
While extending its condolences to the victims’ families, the AOCE affirms that such recurring incidents pose a direct threat to societal peace and public security. They underscore the urgent need for a serious review of firearm possession laws and the implementation of preventive measures to keep weapons out of the hands of those who are mentally and behaviorally unfit.
