New Zealand: Christchurch gunman who killed 51 Muslim worshippers appeals against a life sentence

New Zealand: Christchurch gunman who killed 51 Muslim worshippers appeals against a life sentence

The Australian terrorist, Brenton Tarrant, convicted of killing 51 people when he opened fire on two Christchurch mosques in 2019 has filed an appeal against both his convictions and his sentence. His victims were all Muslim and included children, women and the elderly as he live streamed his crime. “The criminal spent years preparing for the crime; he bought advanced firearms, researched the layouts of mosques, and chose the timing of Friday prayers specifically to maximize the number of victims whom he described as invaders,” said the Prosecutors.
Members of Christchurch's Muslim community had previously raised concerns, saying any appeal would cause further harm to families still grieving the loved ones killed in the attack.
AOCE for its part is hopeful that justice will ultimately be served in this case, and meanwhile calls upon all the concerned institutions to review laws and legislations concerning weapon possession in order to prevent the recurrence of such brutal mass shootings.
