On Sunday June 16, 2019, His Eminence the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Prof Ahmed At-Tayyeb received the Governor of Southern France Region, Rono Mozolier, and the delegation accompanying him during his visit to Cairo.
The Grand Imam said that Islam and all the Divine religions are innocent of the extremism practiced by extremist currents, stressing the need to confront these currents and not allow them to expand as they represent a danger to stability and community coexistence in the East and West. He also stressed the need to stand against the interference of religion in political conflicts, as this is one of the main causes that support terrorism in the world.
His Eminence explained that Al-Azhar is working in cooperation with major religious institutions in the world to confront terrorism and protect religions from its criminal practices. That was clearly shown by the Document of Human Fraternity signed between Al-Azhar and the Vatican in the UAE capital of Abu Dhabi. The Grand Imam also pointed out the importance of continued coordination between Western countries and Al-Azhar in conveying the truth of Islam and protecting young people from being fooled by extremist actions and ideas.
On his part, the Governor of Southern France Region expressed his country's great interest in the actions of the Grand Imam being the major symbol of the Muslim world. He also pointed out that the attitude of Al-Azhar and its efforts in supporting pluralism and coexistence have been received with great approval in France and Europe. Moreover, he expressed his hope for further cooperation between France and Al-Azhar aiming to preserve the values of peace and social integration, in the light of what France faces in its attempts to disseminate the extremist ideas that threaten the values of the French Republic.
