Episode 11

Episode 11

The Grand Imam: "Simplicity and non-exaggeration in the cost of living is positively reflected in the stability of the family".

In the eleventh episode of his Ramadan program on the Egyptian television, His Eminence the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Prof Ahmed Aṭ-Ṭayyeb, has said, “Simplicity and non-exaggeration in the cost of living is positively reflected in the stability of the family.” One of the husband’s rights is that his wife should protect his wealth. She doesn’t have the right to take from his money without permission except in two cases. First, if her husband is a miser and she needs to spend on herself and her children. In this case, she takes enough of his money with moderation and does not take too much. Second, when she wants to give charity reasonably. In these two cases, the wife may not deprive her husband of his right to protect his money.

The Grand Imam continued noting that it is also one of the husband’s rights that his wife should take care of herself so that he may see her in her most beautiful possible shape. There's also the right of good relationship with, and love to, her husband, citing the Hadith of Asmā᾿ Bint Yazīd who was named “The Women’s Delegate”. She said to the Messenger of Allah (pbuh), “You, menfolk, have privileges over us (women) by attending Friday and congregational prayers, visiting the sick, witnessing the funerals and frequently performing Hajj, the best of all that is Jihad for the sake of Allah”. The Prophet (pbuh) replied, “You may leave now, woman, and tell other women who have delegated you that a woman's good relationship with her husband, seeking his pleasure, and maintaining his approval, are indeed equal to all the above-mentioned [male privileges, in terms of reward]”. The woman the left, cheering and exclaiming happily, 'Allah is Great'.".

The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar has called on the wife to be creative in the way she's dressed, the food and drinks she prepares, and in arranging furniture inside the house in order to break monotony and the daily routine, and to please her husband, while adhering to simplicity and non-exaggeration in spending in order to avoid any extra burden added to the costs of the family living. In addition, she has to lower her voice while talking to her husband. All such actions are strongly reflected in the stability of the family and are likely to strengthen the ties between the husband and his wife. The Grand Imam has also pointed out that this attention on how to deal with family issues in Islam springs out from the importance of this issue, especially in the current circumstances where the family has to undergo much suffering, the case which may lead to a kind of demolition and destruction. Moreover, that is meant to show the spouses’ rights towards each other.

The Grand Imam's program is broadcast at 6:15 p.m. daily, throughout the Holy Month of Ramadan. It discusses a number of Muslim family issues, the rights established in Islam for the husband and the wife, and how to preserve the family as a basis for a solid human community.
