On Sunday, June 6, Al-Azhar’s Grand Imam, Prof. Aḥmad Aṭ-Ṭayyeb, met at Al-Azhar Headquarters, a delegation headed by Archbishop Dr. Josiah Idowu-Fearon, Secretary General of the Anglican Communion, accompanied by Dr. Mouneer Hanna Anees, Archbishop of the Province of Alexandria of the Episcopal/Anglican Church, and Dr. Sami Fawzy, the new Head of Province of Alexandria of the Episcopal/Anglican Church, who will officially take office on Tuesday.
The Grand Imam expressed his appreciation of what Dr. Munir Hanna offered during his tenure and his cooperation with Al-Azhar in the course of dialogue and tolerance. He also congratulated the new President of the Bishops of the Anglican Church, stressing that religious scholars play an important and effective role in serving tolerance and coexistence among people. His Eminence confirmed that Al-Azhar deals with this file with patience, wisdom and perseverance, and exerts great efforts in this regard to support world peace and consolidate human fraternity.
On their part, the Bishops’ delegation expressed their happiness at meeting the Grand Imam, and their pride in his global efforts in the field of dialogue and human fraternity among the people of different faiths. They also expressed their appreciation of the informed discourse of Al-Azhar based on accepting difference and diversity, admitting that the Grand Imam’s meetings and speeches bear witness to the strength of his statements and his powerful stand in the field of consolidating fraternity, moderation, and of accepting the other. The delegation concluded their meeting by stressing that religions are innocent of terrorism, exaggeration and extremism.
