Today, Tuesday 9 Oct. 2018, the Eurasian National University (ENU), Kazakhstan, awarded Prof. Ahmad Al-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and the President of the Muslim Council of Elders, an honorary doctorate. The ceremony was attended by a large number of faculty deans, professors and students as well as a host of high profile Kazakh religious leaders and intellectuals.
On his part, Prof. Yerlan Sydykov, Rector of the ENU, expressed his great pleasure and pride of the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar’s visit, stressing that the ENU is very keen on strengthening and developing its relations with Al-Azhar Al-Sharif. He highlighted also that there will be special focus on mutual action towards qualifying new religious leaders and scholars in order to be able to spread the correct and true religious teachings at mosques and religious centers.
During the ceremony, Prof. Ahmad Al-Tayeb delivered a speech where he confirmed that since its inception, Al-Azhar curricula have been based on foundations that combine both the textual and intellectual sciences, promote dialogue and respect all opinions, views and schools of thought. This helps to protect the students of Al-Azhar from falling prey to the terrorist and extremist thought, Al-Tayeb added.
The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar commended the major role and contribution of the Kazakh people in the flourishing and development of the Islamic civilization through distinguished and brilliant scholars, such as al-Farabi, the Muslim Philosopher, Abu Ibrahim Ishaq al-Farabi, the author of Diwan al-Adab and the erudite scholar al-Jawhari, the author of Mu’jam al-Sihah.
Eurasian National University is an acknowledged academic, research, social and cultural center founded in 1996. It was awarded the prestigious international medal “United Europe” (Oxford, 2005), the International Socrates award for its contribution to the intellectual development of modern society (Oxford, 2006), and the golden star “The CIS Best Company” (Moscow, 2007).
