Although Gaza is suffering the worst humanitarian disaster the world has ever seen, the UN Security Council has failed once again to issue a resolution imposing a ceasefire in the Strip. The draft resolution proposed by Algeria on behalf of the Arab Group was quashed by the United States’ veto for the third time.
In this context, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) voiced its deep regret at  the Security Council’s failure, stressing that “obstructing the issuance of a resolution calling for a ceasefire in an armed conflict that claimed the lives of more than 29,000 civilians, most of them children and women, is a shameful precedent in the history of the Security Council”, strongly denouncing “the selectivity and double standards in dealing with wars and armed conflicts in various regions of the world, which has come to question the credibility of the rules and working mechanisms of the current international architecture, especially the Security Council, which is entrusted with the responsibility of preventing and settling conflicts and halting wars.”
On its part, Al-Azhar Observatory for Combating Extremism (AOCE) commends the role of the Egyptian mission to the UN and the efforts of the Arab Group, and pays tribute to the MoFA strongly and rightfully worded note. In addition, the AOCE expresses its categorical rejection of any move towards that displacement of the Palestinians internally or elsewhere, noting that this would destabilize the whole region.
