The Grand Imam Dr. Ahmad Al-Tayyeb, Sheikh Al-Azhar received a delegation from the supreme council of Muslim women in Nigeria as well as Nigerian tribes’ princesses.

His eminence the Grand Imam stated that Islam is the first to provide women fair treatment and equality in terms of rights and duties, and is the first to grant women financial independence at a time when newborn girls were buried, where women were deprived of their inheritance, and were oppressed. Sheikh Al-Azhar added that Islamic teachings represent the first revolutionary act in history to emancipate women.

His eminence added that the actions committed by some militia groups which claim to be part of Islam, and then assault women and take them as captives, is a clear violation of the teachings of Islam. The Grand Imam pointed out that Al-Azhar counts on tribes’ princesses and leading women in the Nigerian community to counter the false horrific image of Islam that is portrayed by Boko Haram, by demonstrating how Islam gives fair treatment to women. His eminence expressed the readiness of Al-Azhar to support women in Nigeria and send further medical convoys for treatment and rehabilitation of terrorist victims especially women.

On their part, the delegation members of the Nigerian tribes’ princesses commended the Grand Imam’s visit to Abuja and his speech to the Muslim world addressed from the Nigerian capital. Moreover, they commended the efforts of Al-Azhar in countering terrorist thought in Africa through delegations of da’wa and students in different stages of Azharite education, emphasizing that there was never a single terrorist among Nigerian graduates of Al-Azhar. In addition, the delegation members commended the medical and relief convoys of Al-Azhar which were of great benefit in treatment and relief of refugees in refugee and shelter camps.
